      1776 - 1781 STAFFORD COUNTY LEGISLATIVE PETITIONS
1776, Oct. 30 - George Brent and Robert Brent state that on 27 April 1776 they each had a slave condemned in
Stafford County for felony, which the late Convention thought proper to pardon , but as they had made an attempt
to escape to the enemy, they were ordered to be employed in the lead mines, and your petitioners to receive a
reasonable hire for their services . The wages are not equal to the labor of the slaves. They ask their return or that the Commonwealth purchase the slaves. Reasonable.
