      Family records indicate a birth year of 1668 for James STODDERT. He was married to Mary (unknown) at least by 1695 [Indenture from James Stoddert and wife Mary to John Preston, planter of Anne Arundel Co. for £67.10 on 16 May 1695; parcel called Barshg Bay; containing 80 acres.] It is uncertain when sons James, William and John were born, but in all probability it was earlier than 1704-1708. It has been speculated that James' wife is the daughter of Thomas Driffield because of the notation "son in law" for James in his will. But it is my understanding that that term was used to imply "step-son."

      James Stoddert Jr. was also known as James Stoddert, Esq. He was born circa 1704 and died young sometime before 30 Apr 1728. He had married Sarah Parker, daughter of George Parker Jr. and Susannah Parrot. They had no children and the partial distribution of his estate went to his half brothers, Benjamin and Thomas Stoddert. After James' death, his widow Sarah married James Loch Weems. James Stoddert had died sometime before April 30 1728 as his widow Sarah had already married James Weems by then. The executor of his estate was his brother John Stoddert and administratrix, Sarah Weems as noted in 1728.

      There was not a James Stoddert III. The 1736 notation you show for him is still referring to the estate of James Stoddert Jr. noted above. I hope this helps.

      I am looking for descendants of James STODDERT who emmigrated from Scotland circa 1675 and settled in LaPlata, Charles county, Maryland. He had three sons with his first wife, Mary: James, William & John. He then had two sons with his second wife, Elizabeth BISHOP, whom he married in 1709: Benjamin (b. ca 1710) & Thomas (b. ca 1712). James was the grandfather of Benjamin STODDERT, the first Secretary of the Navy. I would love to exchange information with members of this STODDERT family.

      I don't know anything specifically about William STODDERT, but I speculate that he may be related (brother perhaps?) to Benjamin STODDERT (b. 1751, Charles County, Maryland) who fought in the Revolutionary War and was the first Secretary of the Navy under Adams, and son of Thomas & Sarah (MARSHALL) STODDERT. Benjamin and his wife, Rebecca (LOWNDES) STODDERT also had a son named William (though too young to have been shown in the 1790 census). William was a common STODDERT family name. Are we related?

      James Stoddard patented land tract called "Yarrow" in Prince George's County,Md. in 1696. Does anyone know of him or his place of origin or ancestry or descendents?

      In a book "Marriages and Deaths from the Maryland Gazette: 1727-1839" compiled by Robert Barnes and published by Gen.Publ. Co., Inc in 1979 there were several STODDERT entries. I made only the most superficial notes on them but one was "Mr. Truman Stoddert d. Feb. 7, 1765" and the other was "Mr. Benjamin Stoddert d. Dec 23, 1813 in his 62nd year"

      Her father, John T. Stoddard, is further identified in the will as "Esquire of Wicomico". In "Marriages & Deaths from the Maryland Gazette" I found that John T. Stoddert, Esq. of Chas. Co. and Miss Elizabeth Gwinn of Annapolis were married 23 My 1815.
      ===
      The senior James Stoddert was supposedly born sometime before 1666 in Scotland and emigrated to this country circa 1675. James was the Surveyor-General for the Colony of Maryland. It is believed that his first wife and mother of James, William and John was Mary Driffield, daughter of Thomas Driffield. He secondly married Elizabeth Bishop and had sons Benjamin and Thomas.

      And now here, Robert Hanson Jr and William Winter, return to this Court the Commission afd with the following certificate and subsequent depositions:
      The execution of this Commission may appear by the depositions hereunto annexed. Signed Aug 15, 1738 - Robt. Hanson, Wm Winter.
      Robert Covert, age about 46, declares that about 17 years ago, he saw Thomas Simpson go to a place about 24 yards from the head of a valley making out of Potomack River, and about 70 yards from a tobacco house wherein James Gow now lives, on the north side thereof, and heard the sd Simpson swear that there stood the dividing tree between Sympson's land and Marlow's, and this deponent further says that the sd Sympson did swear, that he being at the sd place in company with his father and the sd John Marlow, he heard the sd Marlow say to sd Simpson there stood their dividing tree, and sd Simpson made answer that he knew that. Aug 15, 1738.
      Richard Speake, age about 40, being at the place where Robert Covert swore to, declares that 17 years ago, this deponent heard Thos: Sympson swear that there stood the beginning tree of Liverpool, and this deponent understood it to be the dividing tree between Liverpool and Tower hill, and further, this deponent says that by Thos: Simpson's oath, he understood'that the 2nd bounded tree of Liverpoole stood on a Bluff Point near Potomack River on the north side of Goose Bay. Aug 15, 1738.
      Mary Perrie, age about 35, declares that above 20 years ago, her father, William Thomas, in the presence of this deponent, showed Mr. James Stoddart the place mentioned in William Smith's deposition and declared that there formerly stood a bound tree of a tract of land called Tower hill, and that about 17 years ago, Sus:a Thomas, in the presence of this deponent, showed the same place, as near as she can remember, to the Land Commissioners for a boundary of the sd land, and to the best of this deponent's knowledge, she thinks that the sd Susannah made oath to it. Aug 15, 1738.
      William Smith, age about 50, declares that about 17 years ago, the Land Commission, being then examining witnesses relating to the bounds of Mr. Luckett's lands at Chickamuxson, this deponent being present, saw Susannah Thomas show the sd Commissioners a place where she declared a bound tree formerly stood, which was a bounded tree of a tract of land in possession of John Marlow called Tower hill, and that to the best of this deponent's memory, sd Susannah either made oath or offered to make oath to the sd place, which place is about 50 yards to the southward of a tobacco house belonging to James Gow and in the sd Gow's corn field, and further, the sd William declares, that at the same time, one Thos: Simpson showed a place to the sd Commissioners Page 520. where a bounded tree formerly stood, and then made oath that there stood a bounded tree of a tract of land formerly belonging to the sd Simpson's father, called Liverpool, which place is 70 yards to the north of the sd tobacco house and about 25 yards off the head of a valley that falls in Potomack River. And further, the deponent says that the sd Simpson, at the same time, made oath to a marked pine tree and declared that it was one of the bound trees of the afd land called Liverpoole, which tree then stood on a Bluff Point near Potomack River on the north side of Goose bay.
