      KNOW ALL MEN that I THOMAS CHETWOOD of the County of LANCASTER as well for a valuable consideration in hand paide me by EDWARD CARTER of the same County as also for divers other good causes have sold and confirmed for my selfe my heirs and assigns and every of them grant unto the said EDWARD CARTER the moiety or one halfe of Six hundred acres of land being in the County of Rappa. and is bounded as followeth Vizt. beginning at a corner marked bush standing by R L PATH called by the name of COLLO LEE's PATH runing NNW to a marked corner white Oak thence runing West to a marked Pocickery thence S and by W to the first mentioned tree the said moiety or one halfe part of the land being now in the possession of Mr. THOMAS WRIGHT or his assignes, To have and to hold the said moiety or one halfe of land unto the sd EDWARD CARTER his heirs and assigns forever with warranty against all persons whatsoever and to make all such further and lawful! assurance and conveyance of the premises unto the said EDWARD CARTER and his heirs when resonably devised and also that he the said THOMAS CHETWODE and ELIZABETH his Wife shall acknowledge this Deed in the Court of Rappa. when required. In Witness whereof the said THOMAS CHETWODE hath hereunto put his hand and seale dated this 25th of June 1672

      THIS INDENTURE made the twelvth day of Decembr: 1683 and in the five and thirtieth yeare of the Raigne of or: Soveraigne Lord Charles the second &c. Between EDWARD CARTER of the County of LANCASTER, Plantr., of the one part and HENRY HARTLY of the County of Rappa: also Planter, of the other part Witnesseth that the said EDWARD CARTER for a valluable consideration to him paid by the said HENRY HARTLY well and truly paid hath granted unto the said HENRY HARTLY his heires the moyety or one halfe parte of Six hundred acres of land being in the County of Rappa: and bounded as followeth: Begining at a corner marked Beech standing by R. L. PATH called by the name of COLO. LEES PATH and runing N. W. N. to a marked corner white Oake, thence runing W. Sow:rly to a marked Pockickory, thence S & W to the first mentd. tree; the said moyety of land now or late in the occupation of THOMAS WHITE or his assignes (the whole Six hundred being granted to THOMAS CHETWOOD & JNO: KILLINGHAM by Pattent bearing date the 26th day of April in the yeare 1670 togeather with all the proffitts and hereditamts. to the said land belonging; To have and to hold unto the said HENRY HARTLY his heires forever subject nevertheless to the quitrents wch shall henceforth grow due to the Chieffe Lord of the Prmisses and that he the said EDWARD CARTER and ANDREY his now Wife shall acknowledge by these prsents in due forme of Law before the Court of Rappa, wch acknowledgement shall be deemed to vest the said prmisses in the said HENRY HARTLY In Witness whereof the parties aforesaid sett their hands and seales

TAVERNER, our lawfull Attorney to appeare before the Worl: Court of Rappa: and acknowledge one Deed of bargaine and Sale of date hereof made between said EDWARD CARTER of the one part and HENRY HARTLY of the County of Rappa:, Planter, and further I the said ANDREY doe hereby disclayme all right or title of power to the land granted and Impower hereby the said Attorney to acknowledge the same confirming what or: said Attorney shall doe Witness or: hands and seales the 12th day of December 1683

      JOHN MERRIMAN, 500 acs., 14 Nov. 1649, p. 190. Being a neck, lyeing on the N. side of Rappa. River, upon Island Neck Cr., beg. at a poynt at Seymes Cr. Mouth, up Island Neck Cr. to the head, being Wm. Newsom's utmost bounds, to the head of parting cr. dividing this from land of Thomas Harwood. Trans. of 10 pers: Angle Johnson, Elinor Gillis, Tho. Tuata (?), William Harrison, Heilton Arrens, Rebecca Fraine, Audry Merryman, Robert Adkins, his own adventure 3 tymes. His last adventure is yett due to him. Test: R. Huberd.

      Note:
      He died intestate. Court of 21 Nov 1674 commissioned administration of the estate of John Merriman, dec'd to Audrey Merriman, relict of the said John Merriman. On 13 Jan 1675, William Merriman, heir of John Merriman, dec'd in administration with his mother, Audrey Merriman, petitions for his estate. The inventory was made in Nov 1674 by Thomas Chowning, George Bussey, William Sonnett, D. Parish and Dominie Therryot. Listed were a Bible annd other books, four horses, twelve cows, tables, chairs, beds, dram cups, looking glasses, kitchenware, tools, saddles and other items, total value of 20,640#, tabacco and the original grant of 500 acres.

      By Nov 1680, his widow had married Edward Carter. A deed of Nov 1680 reads: "Indenture between William, the eldest son of John Merriman, late of said county, Charles Merriman, Lancaster wheelwright, youngest son of said John Merriman, and Edward Carter of the same county and Audrey his wife, the late widow and relict of the said John Merriman, dec'd... to Col. John Carter and Capt. David Fox, gentlemen for 1000# tabacco... being part of 500 acres granted to John Merriman 14 Nov 1649... 50 acres standing on the point at the mouth of small creek...".
