Charles County Maryland Will Book AH-9, 1785-1788; Page 484. Mary Carter's Will.
I, Mary Carter of CC, am weak in body but of sound and disposing mind and memory. Firstly, I want my just debts paid out of hand by my executor.
To my grandson Joseph Carter - a Negro boy named Davie, and 1 feather bed & furniture & bedstead & cord, 1 cow and her increase, and choice of my horses.
To my granddaughter Henrietta Moore - 1 feather bed &, furniture & bedstead, and the choice of my horses, and 1 cow and 1 side saddle.
To my granddaughter Rachel Moore - 1 heifer, 1 feather bed & furniture & bedstead.
To my granddaughter Elizabeth Moore - 1 heifer.
To my grandson Jesse Carter - 1 Negro woman called Beck and a Negro boy called Simon.
To my grandson John Carter - 1 Negro girl named Agnes.
To my grandson William Carter (son of Henry Carter decd) - 1 Negro girl named Lettice.
To my granddaughter Ann Carter - I Negro boy named James (son to my Negro woman named Sarah).
To my daughter Elizabeth Moore - 1 Negro girl called Winnifrid, to be at her disposal.
To my daughter Mary Moreland - 1 Negro girl called Araminta, to be at her disposal.
To my son Freeman Carter - all the increase of his Negro woman called Martha. Also 1 pair of hand mill stones.
To my grandson Joseph Carter - the use of all the Negroes belonging to the plantation which I claim by my decd husband's will, to take care of the crop on hand, which crop I give to the sd Joseph Carter in order to discharge my just debts, after his dividend is taken from it. I also give Joseph the use of 2 Negroes, Watt and Pegg, for the space of 2 years, in case he chooses to accept of them and discharge part of my debts, if any shall remain after the crop on hand is settled and in case anything be gained by sd Negroes over and above satisfying any creditors, to be for the support of himself and the 2 granddaughters residing with me, and at the expiration of 2 years, the sd Negroes, Watt and Pegg, are to be at liberty to choose a master that will buy them, even if it should happen that they may sell at a lesser price than usual and the purchase money arising thereby, together with a Negro boy named Alexander, my debts being first paid, be equally divided among my 3 daughters, namely Ann, Sophania, and Catharine. I also give to Joseph the use of 2 Negro girls named. Charity and Mary until my grandson Jesse Carter shall arrive at the age of 21 years, at which time, them and their increase, if any arrive, are to be delivered to sd Jesse Carter and to be equally divided among the children of my son, Henry Carter, decd.
