      1722-1730 Essex County, Virginia Wills, Bonds & Inventories, No. 4; [John Frederick Dorman]; Page 265-65a. Will of William Fletcher of Southfarnham Parish in the County of Essex, being sick and weak of body, dated 5 Feb. 1727/8.
      Unto my loving wife Martha Fletcher all my whole estate during her widowhood.
      My said loving wife shall have use of my dwelling plantation till my son Nathan Fletcher shall come to the age of twenty years.
      My son Nathan Fletcher shall be under the tuition of my loving wife till he shall come to the age of twenty.
      My son William Fletcher shall be under the tuition of Wm. Gatewood and Katherine his wife till he shall come to the age of twenty years.
      To my loving son William Fletcher when he shall arrive to the age of twenty years two young cows.
      All the remaining part of my estate equally between my three children Nathan Fletcher, James Fletcher and Phebe Fletcher as they shall come to age. In case my loving wife Martha Fletcher should die before my children comes to age then James Hipkings shall take my estate together with my three children Nathan Fletcher, James Fletcher and Phebe Fletcher.

      KNOW ALL MEN that wee WILL: YOUNG, WILLIAM COVINGTON & HENRY WOODNUT of the County of Essex are firmely bound unto JOHN CATLETT Gent., President of the said County Court in the sume of Twenty pounds Sterling to the payment thereof we bind ourselves this 11th day of March 1701
      The condicon of this obligacon is that if WILLIAM YOUNG, Guardian of KATHERINE CARTER., Orphan of RICHD. CARTER deced, doe truely pay unto the said Orpah all such Estate as come to his hands as soon as said Orphan shall attaine lawful! age or when required by the Justices of the peace of Essex County as alsoe to keepe harmless the said justices from all trouble that may arise about the said Estate Then this obligacon to be void otherwise to remaine in full force

      THIS INDENTURE made this 16th day of June in the year of our Lord God one thousand seven hundred and Thirty Between WILLIAM GATEWOOD and KATHERIN his Wife of the County of Essex and Parish of Southfarnham of one part and THOMAS WILLIAMSON JUNER of the aforesd County and Parish of the other part Witnesseth that the sd WILLIAM GATEWOOD and KATHERINE his Wife for the sum of two thousand foure hundred pounds of lawfull Sweet Sented Tobacco and Cask to them paid path granted and sold unto him the said THOMAS WILLIAMSON JUNER his heirs & assigns forever all that percell of land in the Parish of Southfarnham within the County of Essex and bounded begining at a red Oak a Corner of THOMAS COOPERs in the line of BEN JA. FISHER by the MILL ROAD side, runing thence South Easterly along a line of marked trees over the GLEADY SWAMP to a Scrubby Oake standing in THOS. EDMONDSONs line thence along his line to THOMAS KIDDs line thence including all the upper part of the sd Devident of land according to the several courses of the PATENT to the place where it begun containing Seventy five acres Together with all Timber & Trees likely to become Timber, Swamps, and Appurtenances whatsoever to the said land appartaining and all the Estate right of the sd WILLIAM GATEWOOD and KATHERINE his Wife To Have and To Hold the sd land unto him the said THOMAS WILLIAMSON JUNER his heirs and assigns forever, which sd land is part of one hundred and fifty acres given by WILL to RICHARD CARTER by Mr. PHILLIP PARR deced and the sd RICHARD CARTER being dead without disposeing of the same it doth now of right belong unto the aforesd KATHERIN GATEWOOD Sister to the sd RICHARD CARTER deced and the said WILLIAM GATEWOOD and KATHERIN his Wife granted the sd Parcell of land and every part unto the sd THOMAS WILLIAMSON his heirs and assigns forever.
