(a) Priscilla Theodosia Short was born by 1787, having been the only child of her parents named in the will of their aunt, Anne Short.45 She married on 8 March, 1810, Thomas Atwell Smith (born April, 1783), son of Colonel Johnston Smith of Prince William County and wife, Ann Atwell, daughter of Colonel Thomas Atwell (1737-1788)87 and Ann Brent (1737- 1802),65 his wife, of Dumfries. The Fredericksburg Virginia Herald" announced:
"Married on Thursday Evening the 8th instant, by the Rev. Samuel B. Wilson, MR. THOMAS A. SMITH of Dumfries, to the amiable MISS PRISCILLA T. SHORT, daughter of the late Mr. Thos : Short of 'Carlton,' Stafford County."
It is to be noted that the newspaper erred in giving the name of her father as Thomas.
Thomas A. Smith was for some time deputy clerk of the Prince William County Court. He rendered several months' active service during the War of 1812.70 On 10 May, 1816, he joined his wife in conveying "Belmount" in King George County° to George FitzHugh. It is recited in this deed that the 386 acre tract was vested in "Priscilla Smith by the will of John Short, her father." The graveyard was reserved in this deed.
Thomas Atwell and Priscilla Theodosia (Short) Smith had seven children. Two of their daughters became the wives of two distinguished Baptist ministers, the Rev. John Newton Fox (1811-1883) and the Rev. Richard Andrew Fox (1824-1901) .71
