Apr 13, 1772 from Samuel Barnes and Sarah Barker Barnes, his wife, of CC, to Joseph Thompson of CC, for 5 shillings, and for and in consideration of Samuel owing sd Joseph, John Hanson Jr, George Lee, Alexander Brown, John Hawkins, Benjamin Philpott, Joseph Aderton, Enock Magruder, 4nd George Mason sundry sums of money and tobacco which is out of his power to pay without selling his land, and notwithstanding a deed which is executed for his land dated Mar 7, 1770 to his daughter, Mary Barnes, which deed was passed subsequent many years to the contracting the debts afd, sd Samuel and Sarah Barnes have sold to sd Joseph Thompson, all the remaining part of 2 tracts of land in CC, the one called St Thomas and the other, Barnes' Purchase, now in the possession of sd Samuel Barnes, being the same land mentioned in the deed to his daughter, Mary Barnes afd. It was intended by the deed passed by sd Samuel Barnes should have the use of sd lands during her natural life, and sd Sarah Barker Barnes, wanting sd Samuel Barnes to pay the debts afd, for 1 shilling, sd Sarah Barker Barnes hereby releases all her right to the land afd to sd Joseph Thompson. To fairly ascertain the value of sd lands, sd Joseph Thompson at any time, not exceeding 6 weeks after the date hereof, will publicly expose to sale the same lands to the highest bidder, and will divide the sale money among Joseph Thompson, John Hanson Jr, George Lee, Alexander Brown, John Hawkins, Benjamin Philpott, Joseph Aderton, Enock Magruder, and George Mason, and will return any surplus money to sd Samuel Barnes.
