      SMITHS OF MIDDLESEX COUNTY, VIRGINIA
By Mrs. P. W. Hiden, Newport News, Va.
The family of Major-General Robert Smith, a member of the Virginia Council. As early as 1659, as Colonel Smith, he appears in the list of Lancaster tithables. He was a prominent member of the vestry of Christ Church, Middlesex County, and a great deal of the business transacted at the vestry meetings was done on his motion. So far as is known, he had an only son Robert who married an Elizabeth and had an only child, Elizabeth, who married about 1700 Harry, son of Major Robert Beverly and his first wife Mary. With the death of Robert Smith, Jr., this family of Smiths became extinct in the male line.
