I descend from James William Marshall, the son of Susanah O’Rear and James Pede Marshall. I was curious as to where Liberty Hill was and Emailed Donna Sarchet about it. Since then I have reviewed my O’Rear and Marshall notes and old Marshall letters dating back to 1837 some of which state they were written at Liberty Hill. Also the Miss Susan Monroe Marshall (1824-1919) whose letter has been mentioned on the O’Rear list from time to time, was written at Liberty Hill.

Our Marshall family tradition holds that about 1790, the widow Joanna Pede Marshall and her children with some O'Rears (her son James' wife's family) moved to then Frederick County, VA and settled on top of the mountain south of Ashby's Gap, near Paris, VA. There were three homes built on this property, i.e.: Joanna Peed Marshall built on the eastern part overlooking Paris - the foundations of the house, barn, etc. were still discernible in 1939.
Directly west of this house overlooking the Shenondoah Valley was the
original Benjamin O'Rear place in the possession of descendant Alfred Green and it was standing in 1939. Slightly to the north, stood "Uncle John Marshall's" house that was torn down and moved to Millwood, VA by 1939.
"Uncle John Marshall" may have been the eldest son of Susanah O’Rear and James Pede Marshall.

Because the Marshalls who listed Liberty Hill as the location of their
residence in their correspondence lived on the mountain south of Ashby’s Gap, this mountain and Liberty Hill are one and the same.

As reported on the O’Rear list of 10 Aug 1998, Nancy Smith who is an O’Rear, said: "I have also been to Liberty Hill and have seen the ruins where Jessie’s house remains. Just below the hill from them is Benjamin’s house which can be seen clearly from the road as you drive over Paris Mountain on Rt. 50."

The above locates Liberty Hill which I believe is in Clarke County while
near-by Paris is in Fauquier County.

I hope this will be of interest to Liberty Hill O’Rear descencants.

      James Rush Marshall
