      Northumberland County Court August 18, 1697
      Upon the motion of JANE GREENSTEED, Widow and Administratrix of JOHN GREENSTEED, JOHN WEBB, WILLIAM YARRATT, RICHARD RICE, HENRY DAWSON and RICHARD ROUT, or any four of them, being first sworn by the nearest Justice, are by the Court appointed to appraise the Estate of the said deceased JOHN and ordered that the said Administratrix exhibit an Inventory thereof in the next Court upon Oath.

      KNOWE ALL MEN by these pr:sents that wee JOHN PEIRCE, HANNAH LEE and WILLIAM GREENSTED [Grinstead] of County of Northumberland for the love and affecon we have and beare unto the two Children of WILLIAM GREENSTED JOHN & WILLIAM, wee doe by these pr:sents ( ) JOHN & WILLIAM each of them a cowe Calfe ( ) JOHN GREENSTED about two moneths old by the name of Cherry, the marke a hole & a swallow forke crop & hole & a peice taken of ( ) the Calfe belonging to WILLIAM GREENSTED ( ) knowne by the name of Coale and the ( ) the former red Calfe; To have & to hold the said cowe calves & their future increase for ever: HANNAH LEE, WILLIAM GREENSTED & JOHN PIERCE doe by these presence give to the above named JOHN & WM. GREENSTED one black heyfer with a white spot or two in the flanke two yeares old & upwards. the marke a crop in the left eare with two slats in it, and a slitt in the right eare and a small peice cut of on the top of it; To have & to hold the sd. heyfer & her future increase as their pper: goods for ever; onely the first cowe calfe wee doe give to ELIZABETH the Daughter of WILLIAM GREENSTED and the male cattle that shall come of the whole stock shall gee to the Father or Guardian of the sd, Children for his care of the Stock, And if eyther of the Boyes dye before they come to age the Survivor shall enjoy the whole Stock And if the boyes doe live till they come to age, then to be devided equally hetweene them, And we the aforesd, JOHN PEIRCE, HANNAH LEE & WILLIAM GREENSTED JUNIOR doe bind us our heires Exrs, & Admrs. to defend the aforesd, Gift of two cowe calves & heyfer & their increase from the claimes of any p:son or p:sons whatsoever; In confirmacon wee have caused this Deed of Gift to be made this 16th day of June And have sett our hands & seales

I bequeath unto my two said Sonns, two sowes m:rkt, wth: ye same m:rke of their cattle, I alsoe bequeath unto my two Sons, two pewter dishes & one great pott & ye shortest of my spitts; I bequeath unto my Son in Law, JNO: GRIMSTED, ye longest of my two Guns & ye shortest for my Son in Law; WM; GRIMSTED; I bequeath to my said Sonns one pestle & all my working tooles. I doe alsoe will that my Children should be brought up on my Plantacon & that HUGH STATHAM should be their tutor to nurtur them till they come to age, & to take charge of ye Plantation & Cattle & hogs allowing ye sd: HUGH STATHAM the male of all their Cattle till ye Children doe come of age; I will alsoe that the increase of my Childrens hoggs should be disposed off for their p:sent use; I will alsoe that all my cattle & hogs that I have not disposed of to my Children shall pay my Debts & if there bee overplus, to be disposed off for the use of my Children.       Northumberland County Court August 16, 1688
      Whereas JOHN GREENSTED is strongly Suspected to have been guilty of the death of his Greensted to be deceased wife ELIZABETH GREENSTED. And Several Circumstances appearing to the Court by Several witnesses upon their oaths for Confirmation of the said Suspicion, It is thererfore ordered II lat the Sheriff keep the said GREENSTED in safe, Custody and bring him to the Court.

      [Special] Session convened October 5, 1688
      Upon an Inquest made by Capt. THOMAS JONES Coroner for this County into the Death of ELIZABETH (Late Wife of JOHN) GREENSTED, a Jury of the neighborhood appointed and sworn by the said Coroner passed their Verdict that the said JOHN GREENSTED had been causal of his wife ELIZABETH's death, and referred a further proceeding in the matter to this County Court where the evidences relating to the matter were examined and sworn and herewith are presented to the General Court. And whereas a Venire facias 14 cannot possibly be procured for the Carrying of the said JOHN GREENSTED to James City the General Court being so far, It is therefore ordered that the Sheriff take him into Safe Custody and deliver him to the Sheriff in James City by the 4th day of next General Court, and that he likewise summons six persons freeholders of the Neighborhood (viz.) Mr. JAMES JOHNSON, THOMAS FLYNT, PETER FLYNT, JOHN ROACH, SAMUELL POOLE and WILLIAM WARWICK, with WILLIAM TAYLER Sr., RACHELL YARRETT, ABIGALL OLDAM, MARY RUSSELL, MARY HAWKINS and DOROTHY JACKMAN witnesses in the aforesaid behalf, to appear at the said General Court the fourth day thereof.
