EVANS, JOHN, of Sittingburne Parish in the County of Rappa. 29 January, 1683; 1 die 8bris, 1684.
All the land I am possessed of to my two sons John Evans and Wm. Evans to be equally divided between them both for quantity and quality the division to be made when my son John is twenty one but in case the one shall decease before his full age the other shall succeed to his inherititnce. To each of my children a mare and all their increase the youngest mare to my son John the other to my son William also to each of them a cow and its increase my son John to have a cowe called Mealy Nose William to have a black cow called Slow. Desires his children shall stay and live with their mother until they each of them attain the age of nineteen years.
To father-in-law Mr. Wm Veale a case of pistols and holsters.
To my loving brother Martin Johnson a chest which I had of him also a gun I had of him and a Caster hat.
To my Godchild Margaret Ward daughter of Bryant Ward a cowe calf. All the rest of my goods and chattles after my debts are satisfied to my well beloved wife Elizabeth Evans.
Wife Elizabeth to be Executrix and to be guardian of the children.

John Evans was b. bef. 1650, perhaps in Barbados, s/o Peter & Elizabeth PERRY Evans, & perhaps the grandson of the Griffith Evans transported to Barbados, 25 Dec 1635. He d. between the 29th of January 1683/84 & the 1 die (day) 8bris(Latin,Octobris; the 8th month of the Julian calendar, then in use in the Colony of Virginia) 1684. Winslow's History of Perquimans county says he came from Barbados with his parents, siblings, Peter, Richard & Sarah, & the Woolard family. His sons, John (prob. the elder as named first, a habit that continues today, & not likely to have been required to wait, until a younger brother reached majority, to claim his inheritance) & William were born no earlier than 30 Jan 1664/65, as neither was 19 on the day the will was written. No other children are named.
Martin Johnson is called "brother". I find no relationship, unless he is the husband of John's sister, Sarah; of whom I find nothing but her name.

THIS INDENTURE made the twenty fifth day of Aprill 1670 in the yeare of our Lord God one thousand six hundred & seaventy Betweene THOMAS GOULDMAN of the County of Rappa. & ALLICE my Wife on the one part and JOHN EVANS of the same County Cooper of the other part Witnesseth that wee the sd THOMAS GOULDMAN & ALICE for divers goods causes & valueable consideration as thereunto moveing & especially of & for the consideration of the sums of five thousand three hundred pounds of tobacco the Receipt whereof wee doe hereby acknoweldge doe hold or:selves fully satisfied & paid thereof doe clearly acquitt & discharge the said JOHN EVANS by these prsents doe give bargaine sell & confirme unto the said JOHN EVANS & his heires for ever Two hundred acres of land wch land is scituate lying & being uppon the KINGS ROADE and MILL ROADE neare unto Major JOHN WEIRS MILL one moyety thereof being formerly by mee the said GOULDMAN purchased of LEFT. COLL. GOODRICH & boundeth as foll: begining att the land of PHILLIP SANDERS and running towards the land of THO. RAWSON allonge by or neare the cleared ground called by the name of TURKEY COCK HILL the other moyety purchased by me the said GOULDMAN of PHILLIP SANDERS and bounded as Folliowing; halfe a poynt West from the corner tree of JOHN MILLS his Mill & one hundred twenty & seaven perches a little over the MILL ROADE abovesd to a red Oake thence West one halfe poynt Northerly to a Hickery One hundred twenty & seaven perches thence North halfe a poynt Esterly one hundred twenty & seaven perches to JOHN MILLS his line of marked trees which extends themselves to the first menconed station To Have and To Hold the above bargained land and prmises unto the said JOHN EVANS his heires for ever with all houses Orchards woods fishings fowling hawkeing & buntings wth all pffits whatseover threunto belonging and further wee the said THO: GOULDMAN & ALLICE for or:selves or: heires or assignes doe covenant & agree to & with the sd JOHN EVANS to warrant the said Bargained land and prmises unto the said JOHN EVANS & his heires from all manner of prson or prsons that shall pretend any right thereunto and Further due pmise att the request of ye sd JNO. TO ALL PEOPLE to whome this prsent writing Indented shall come, JOHN MILLES the Elder & JOANE his Wife of the Pish of Farnham in Rappae: County send Greeting. Know yee that sd JOHN MILLS & JOANE his Wife for consideration of Eleaven hundred pounds of tobacco to them in hand paid by JOHN EVANS of the Pish & County aforesd. Plantr., have sold unto the sd JOHN EVANS his heires & assignes that parcell of land lying behind the Plantation of the sd JOHN EVANS and adjoyning thereto, within two mayne branches there, the one running behind the Cleare ground of the sd EVANS: the other running up the road above that Cleare ground & Cornfeild of the sd EVANS soe far as the Corner tree of the sd MILLES which is adjudged thirty acres more or less and all the right of him the sd JNO, MILLS to the same and all the priviledges thereto belonging which land is part of a Devident of land of five hundred Sixty two acres one Rodd & twenty fower poles granted to the sd JOHN MILLS by Pattent under the hand of Sr: WILLIAM BERKLEY Kt. BE IT KNOWN to all men by these prsents that I JOHN EVANS of the County of Rappae: for a valluable consideracon aliready received doe sell & sett over unto JOHN CHIRCHELL his heires & assignes a certaine pcell of land containing Fifty two acres & a half which sd Land accrued due unto me the sd JOHN EVANS by Virtue of the Last Will & Testament of JOHN SPEED deced & confirmed by order of the Worshipful! Court of the County aforsd. dated Novembr: the 6thm 1679 and I doe likewise deliver unto the said JOHN CHIRCHELL the evidences of the sd Land belonging unto the abovesaid tract and also possession of the sd Land withal! that is thereupon and thereunto belonging with sufficient warranty of peaceable enjoyment of the same from all claimes from or under me my heires and assignes and I doe hereby oblidge me my heires to acknowledge this Deed of Sale unto the sd JOHN CHURCHELL his heires at next Court held for the County of Rappae on the South side of the River As Witness my hand Sc Seale this first of Novembr: 1680

TO ALL CHRISTIAN PEOPLE to whome these presents shall come I WILLIAM 348- VEALE of the Parish of Sittingbourne in the County of Rappahanock in Virginia send Greeting. Know yee that I the said WILLIAM VEALE for the love good will and affection which I bear toward my loving Daughter, ELIZABETH, the now Wife of JOHN EVANS, of the County and Parish aforesaid, Planter, have given unto my said Daughter. ELIZABETH EVANS. and also unto her Husband, JOHN EVANS, them and their heires forever One hundred acres of land being part of a greater divident of land containing Five hundred acres being in the County of Rappa: and Pish of Sittingbourne by me the said WILLIAM VEALE purchased and bought of THOMAS PAGE and ELIZABETH his Wife both deced and by their Deed of Sale bearing date the Seaventeenth day of February in the yeare of or: Lord One thousand Six hundred Sixty and eight more at larg appeareth; the bounds of this said land to take their begining at a certaine levell peice of good land adjoyning to a peice of barron land bounding on the North line of the said land and thence to be laid out Square from the said levell To have and to hold the said land with all the timber and all other the priviledges unto the said JOHN EVANS and ELIZABETH his Wife and their heires forever in as larg and ample maner as said WILLIAM VEALE did heretofore enjoy the same And furthermore I give free license to entr. upon the said land and enjoy for them and either of them with warranty from any persons the true meaning of this above said Deed of Gift of the aforesaid land unto JOHN EVANS, my Sonn in Law, and my Daughter, ELIZABETH, and either of their heires forever. KNOW ALL MEN by these presents that I THOMAS PANNELL in the Parrish of Sittingborne and County of Rappa., Planter, for One thousand Seaven hundred and fifty pounds of Tob: by specialty already received doe sell unto JOHN SPEED him his heirs forever of ye aforesaid Parrish and County a parcel! of land containing fower hundred acres being in ye South side of Rappa. and bounded as followeth Beginning at the South West and upon the land that was mine the said PANNELL sold to EDWARD STAFFORD next adjoyning to NATHAN BENTLY for breadth and for length East towards the River according to a former division that was made between JOHN SPEED and JOHN AMOS also I the said THOMAS PANNELL for the considerations above specified do warrant the land from me my heirs as I the said THOMAS PANNELL at present by Patent doe enjoy the same to the abovesaid JOHN SPEED him his heirs forever As Witness my hand and Seale this 13th day of January in yeare of our Lord God 1674
