Nicholas Blacklock, August 8, 1799; September 30, 1799
I, Nicholas Blacklock of CC being sick and weak of body but of sound disposing mind and memory
Item: To my eight children, to wit; Benjamin, Nicholas Frederick, John Weems, Robert Sidney, Mary Anne, Elizabeth Maria and Elizabeth Cawood {all underage}; all my estate divided equally. My executors shall keep an accurate and separate account against each child's part of my estate of all necessary expenditures in schooling, clothing, and raising my children to the years of maturity, doctors' bills excepted.
Item: Whereas my son Benjamin will arrive at the lawful age on the twenty day of August 1808, who will then be entitled to his share and dividend of my estate and as the same cannot be justly ascertained without a sale, I desire that my Executors sell all my estate at public sale soon after August 28, 1808 and he sum be on three years credit and the interest collected annually. Son, Benjamin shall not receive any part of the principal until age 24 yrs.
Item: It is also my will that my Executors shall employ an overseer to manage my plantation and labours theron and return an account of the decrease / increase of negroes and stock yearly on December 11th.
Item: It is my will that my sons be bound to some good trade or business, and that children be brought up in the Roman Catholic Religion and that they be under the care and attention of Teresa Sansberrie (governess).
Item: It is my will that my half of the tobacco debt due by myself and Stephen Cawood to Moses Cawood be paid in due time by my Executors.
Item: It is my will that the negroes being my property now in the possession of James Gantt be released to him in case he pays into the hands of my executors, the sume of 500 pounds current money within the course of the present year. Otherwise my Executors to take such steps to recover the said negroes and the hire thereof for the use of my children.
Item: I give to Mildred Thompson, the annual sum of twenty dollars for the term of ten years. Also, a sufficiency of corn out of my mill for herself and her children during this term.
Item: Whereas I have directed the sale of my lands in 1808, yet some of my children will not be then at age, it is my will that if my mansion house and the lands thereunto adjoining should be then sold at the discretion of my executors, that all children not of full age (and single daughters) are to have the liberty of returning and living on my land in Prince George's County on Mattawoman, on the west side of the road that leads from New Troy to Piscataway. Executors are requested to see that a house be built in Prince George's County for my children and that they are furnished will all things necessary to subsist on.
Item: If the land in Mattawoman Swamp (lying between my lands) the property of the heirs of William Claggett shall be at any time offered for sale, It is my will that my Executors purchase it for the use of my estate, provided that it can be done from the clear proceeds of my estate or from the sale of any surplus stock.
Item: I hereby release the land I purchased at the sale of Charles Maddox's property be released to him and his heirs forever.
Item: If George Page will secure the payment of his debt with me by the first day of January 1811 and will pay the interest thereon annually to my executors, it is my will that he shall be indulged for the payment thereof until that period.
Item: It is my will that John Lovejoy be released from the payments of his bond with me, and that the bond be cancelled.
Item: Whereas Benjamin Cawood one of my executors is poor and needy, it is my will and I do hereby authorize and vest John Spalding my other executor with full power to let and lease unto Benjamin Cawood for and during the term of his natural life, the public house and lot at the place called New Troy (that he now occupies) if he chooses to accept the yearly rent of five shillings current money; also he may enclose 8 or 10 acres of the adjoining land, also the liberty of getting firewood, rail timber and fruit from my orchard. Executors to repair and improve the house and lot at the expense of the estate in the following manner; underpin the house with brick and finish the cellar, build a kitchen with a brick chimney, build a small corn and meat house, a small dairy and a common horse stable. It is also my will that Benjamin Cawood have the use of a young negro woman, likewise the use of two feather beds and furniture, one square table and half a dozen flag chairs during the term of his natural live.
Item: If one or both of my executors die or otherwise prevented to act agreeably to the trust reposed in them, it is my will that Samuel Sansberrie and Nicholas Young shall fill the vacancy.
