      From: rictobin
James Compton, Esq., was a Commissioner of his Majesty's Navy (1747). He
was granted 10,000 acres in what is now Rappahannock Co., Virginia, in 1747.
I thought I had a record that said he was from London but I can't put my
hands on it so I am not sure about that. I have seen nothing that connects
him to the other Comptons who actually lived in that area. I haven't seen
the deeds but there was apparently a sheriff's sale on or about 20 Oct 1788.
There are seven deeds made on that date apparently selling James Compton's
land. Before that date there are nine other listings in the Culpeper County
Deed index also apparently relating to this James Compton.

James Compton from London sold to Thomas Minor 1998 acres on 6 Mar 1764
(Culpeper County, Virginia, Deed book D, page 443) [Dennis, Robert T. Wakefield Manor Rappahannock County Virginia 1734-1992, p. 9]

The 10,000 acre grant to James Compton is south of Flint Hill. The William Clark Compton family lived in the area near Huntly, Virginia, which is 5 miles north of Flint Hill
