      Wee whose names are hereunto subscribed understanding yt: THO: BARRATT hath often times pleaded in Court (in justificacon of him selfe agt, Mr. JNO: SAFFIN) that his neighbors will all give him ye character of an honest man, doe hereby declare that ever since hee, ye said BARRATT, came upon ye place, or yt: wee have had any knowledge of him, wee have found him, sd: BARRATT, to bee a deceitfull jugling theevish fellow & although by aiminge & secrett contrivances wee have not been able or at least have not attempted legally, to prove many theevish practices comitted by ye sd, vile fellow, BARRATT, yet wee doe generally know & beleave (on good grounds) yt: ye sd: BARRATT hath fraudulently & frequently killed many of or: hoggs & cattle & converted ym: to his owns use; that he hath pennd: up severall of or: Cowes & milked them for several' weekes space, that coming at or: houses he hath pilfred & stolen many thinges from us, living high, yet idly, & not taking yt: honest corse to maintaine himselfe & family as other men in this Country of better Estates then hem- self. usually doe; not to speake of his base lascivious courses wch: are infamous in all ye County, in a word, wee have found him, said BARRATT, to bee a meere plague unto us, ever since he came amongst us, and should heartily wish & desire yt: God would remove him from us. ALLEN saith that he hath knowne THO: BARRATT from his Childhood in England, yt: he ran away from his Master, a Mercht. in ROTTERDAME & stole away cloth from him & ran for LONDON & that he was a cheater in LONDON & did act many cheating pranks there towards my Lord of HOLLAND & diverse others & continued his evill behaviour in BARBADOS & was many times imprisoned there for it; & at length joyned wth: a Company of Base p:sons & stole a Ship from thence, and since he came to Virginia, I taxt him of his formr: miscarriages & told him he had broke his Mothers heart; where upon he promised me to become a new man; Insomuch that I paid his Debts for him & putt him into imploymt: for his relacons sake, where he behaved himselfe very deceitfully & stole six or seven pounds of money from mee, soe that at length I having discovered ye continuance of him of his base & theevish practices, I judge him past hope of Amendmt. & gave him over for a reprobate, & did bind him & pinion him & sent him back again into Northumberld: County from whence I had redeemd. him & fetched him; much I could say as to particulars of his villanous accons, but this is only what I shall now say & give undr: my hand this 24th day of July 1665

I ye Depont. forewarned ye sd: BARRAT to desist therein, ye sd: BARRAT replyed yt: if he had done it he would doe it againe, & yt: ye sd. CANADY was a freere man then my selfe; Further ye sd: BARRAT threatned me & beat & abused me as by other testimony may appears; Further when I saw yt: ye sd. Widdow, notwithstanding this Depont. & JERIMIAH CANADY & another having wrought vth: ye sd. Widdow by ye order & appoynmt. of JON: PARKER for ye sd: pigs & further this Depont; sayth not.

      [24th day of July 1665] THOMAS PERRYN aged 44 yeares or thereabouts saith that about ye latter end of Januray 1664, THOMAS BARRATT came to mee, this Depont., to borrow a Canvas ( ) of mee to goe aboard Mr. HASKINS Shippe, whereupon I, this Depont., told him yt: I was going aboard my selfe and if hee would goe wth: mee he might, soe I this Depont., coming to RICHARD RICEs Plantacon in my Canoes wth: sd: BARRATT, hee desired mee, this Depont. to putt ashoare at a certaine point, where the sd. BARRATT there was JEREMIAH CANNADY, Mr. SAFFINs Servant, wth: his clothes ready to runway over to MARYLAND, Whereupon this Deponent replyed, for my part I will have no hand in it to carry away another mans servant, neither will I goe wth: you, soe ye sd: CANNADY went into ye Canowe & went downe ye River wth: ye sd: BARRATT, But I, this Depont., stayed behind, & afterwards ye sd. BARRATT brought home my Canowe and told me, this Depont., that he, ye sd: BARRATT, had gott a very convenient passage for ye sd, Servant & that he had sent him away to MARYLAND, & since that time this Deponent nevr: saw ye sd.       [24th day of July 1665] MICHAEL MILLER aged 22 yeares or thereabouts testifies that RICHARD RICE taxing JEREMY CANNADY, Servtt. to Mr. JNO: SAFFIN, yt: THO: BARRATT for stealing porke wch: CONSTANT DANIELL had hid in ye woods, ye sd. CANNADY answered that he had noe hand in it, for he lay at BARRETTs all that night being twelfth day at night in ye ycare 1664, Another time in ye night, ye sd. CANNADY tooke a brand of fire & being askt. where he was going, he said he was going to Mr. BARRETfs, and severall times both him, ye sd• CANNADY & also THO: YOUNG, another Servtt. of Mr. SAFFINs, when they had bin absent from their business at EXETER LODGE would say they had bin at BARRETTs, & further this Depont, saith that the sd: BARRETT advised mee to steale & told mee that if I would steale anything & bring to him it should never be knowne & further this Deponent saith not

I will sett thereto, & soe Ile write a Lre, to a man yt: lives at ye CLIFFTS to signify that you are a free man soe you may goe clear away & further this Deponent saith not

      [24th day of July 1665] JAMES JOHNSON aged about 32 yeares testified that in ye yeare 1666 in ye moneth of January, JEREMY CANNADY, Servt.. to Mr. JNO: SAFFIN, told this Depont. that hee had found two papers in JONATHAN PARKERs Combe Case wch: hee carried to THOMAS BARRETT, who told him yt: ye sd: Papers were his owne & THOMAS YOUNGs Indentures or Conditions for Service, And yt: he ye sd. CANNADY left ye said Writings in said BARRETTS Custody & keeping for a time, who told him ye said CANNADY that now he was a free man, & that THOMAS YOUNG sometime Servant in Mr. SAFFINs should then have bin free alsoe, if hee had lied: after this ye sd: CANNADY told GEORGE ELLISTONE, Servant to Mr. SAFFIN, that hee would not worke unlesse he, ye sd. GEORGE, would shew him his Condition, & further this Depunt. sayth that it was commonly knowne and reported that ye sd. BARRETT did contrary to Law entertain Mr. SAFFINs Servants & further saith not.

The deposition of Nicholas Trumble, aged 24 yearcs or thereabouts, that within three days after I and my fellow servant Edward Gismur came to our master's house, Thomas Barritt alsoe came to George Richmond who lived then upon the plantation in the kitchin of our master's who sent in George Richmond twice to us to speake with us and when wee came he hearing that my fellow servant had mony would have traded with him for a heifer and have kept itt for him. Barritt hath been several times advising [?] me and my fellow servant to run away and told us that there were severall that did gett cleare and soe might wee. Thomas Barritt being at my master's house unknowne to my master was a talking to me and my fellow servant how wee should manage our business to gett cleare. Upon the same discourse, out master having some business with the maid servant called her upon which call Barrett fearing that my master might know he was their, he spoake to the wench that she should by noo meanes tell her master or mistress he was their, for he would not have them to know itt. Upon which advice wee runn away from our master and now are to suffer the law, which I am surry for, haveing noe cause to runn but by the bad advice of Barrett. Barrett invited me and my fellow servant to his house upon which invitation we both went and when wee came he advised us to run away againe and give him consideration and he would shew us the way. My fellow servant reployed that he had a crowne. Said Barrett, that is little, but said he, the thing that you are minded to give me lett Nicholas bring itt, which is me, and said he and I will talke further. But said he to me, when you bring itt, doe not lett my wife nor the wench see itt nor your fellow servant, see you give it me, two will beare witness, but one won't. The money was to be brought about the middle of 7br [Sept.]

The deposition of Edward Gismur, aged 24 years or thereabouts: Thomas Barrett within three days after I and my fellow servant Nicholas Trumble came to our master's house, Barrett also came to George Richmond who lived then upon the plantation in the kitchin of our master, who sent George Richmond twice to us to speake to us and when we came he hearing that I had money would have traded with me for a heifer and have kept itt for me. Barrett hath beene severall times adviseing me and my fellow servant to run away and told us that their were severall that did gett cleare and further sayeth that Barrett benig [sic] at my master's house unknowne to my master was a talkeing to me and my fellow servant how he should mannage our buiseness to gett cleare. Our master haveing some buiseness for the mayd servant called her.
      Berrett fearing my master should know he was their, he spake to the wench shee should by moe meanes tell her master or mistriss he was there for he would not have them know itt. Upon which advice wee run away and now are to suffer the law, which I am very sorry for, haveing no cause to runn but by Barrett's bad advice. Not long after out master had gott us home againe, Barrett came to my master's house hearing we had not made our escape, cleaverly said to me, calling me countriman, you are a foole and soe is your fellow servant to be taken. Come to me, I will show you the way to goe cleare, which is by way of the New Discovery which will convey you cleare out of the country, upon which I told my fellow servant. Barrett invited me and my fellow servant to his house upon which invitation wee both went and when wee came he advised us to run away and give him consideration and he would show us the way. I replyed I had a crowne. He said that was little, but said he, what thing that you intend to give me, lett Nicholas bring and he and I will talke further, but when you bring itt doe not lett my wife nor the wench see itt, nor your fellow servant see you give it me, for two will beare witness but one will nott. I was saying to Barrett what should wee doe for provision in our journey. The answer he gave mee was to robb [ ?]. One the 27 Xbr [Dec.] I was att Barritt's house. Barrett asked me why Nick did not bring the money for their was a ship in Yorke or James River that was ready to goe for the New Discovery would be a brave passage for us, upon which I told him I could not
      tell.

The deposition of Edward Hawlye, aged 26 yeares or thereabouts, that discoursing with George Richmond about building a house for Mr. Barrett but Richmond answered he must have it first therein a bond I sold Richmond concerning the land, who answered that Mr. Nurse had given it them in and he had torne it or burned it.

      Pages 113a-114. The arbitration of Mr. Dann. Hutt and John How in a difference betweene Thomas Barrett and George Richmond, planters: Thomas Barrett shall pay George Richmond 400 pounds of tobacco on 10 October next and 860 pounds on 10 October following. And Richmond and his wife doe the next Court acknowledge the land sold Barrett for which land by accompt was charged to Burdett 2800 pounds of tobacco.

The deposition of Thomas Barrett, aged 33 yeares or thereabouts, that when Michael Willington did take bond of George Richmond for the bringing in his servants that were by Richmond entertained for that Richmond did desire a discharge and Willington did scruple itt, but the company that was there said pass a discharge, itt will encourage him to bring in the servants and give itt to Mr. Hutt who said don't feare the discharge shall never appeare against you, and Richmond would have had the discharge, but Mr. Hutt said noe, George, I will keepe itt. Afterwards Mr. Willington spoake to Mr. Hutt that he would never lett it appeare who promise he would not lett it appeare against him.
