  • Notes
    • not proved as son

      mm note: Samuel was probably the orphan mentioned in William Carter's 1698 records. Samuel must have been nearly of age to have witnessed Lodwick Rowzee and John Rowzee's June 1699 Sittingbourne Parish, Essex County, Virginia wills. That helps push William Carters birth date back to abt 1659 given 20 year generations.

      Further.... John Carter d 1669 married 3rd Anne Carter 1657 d/o Cleave Carter. William is the right age to be her son. Anne died abt 1662 and John Carter married 4th to Sarah Ludlow 1662-1663. Robert King Carter was their son and the step-brother to William. hence why Robert Carter was noted in William's 1698 estate. It was common not to name all the kids in a will so he was not named.

      Further.....John Carter Jr. probated his father John Carters 1669. John Carter Jr. married Elizabeth Travers who after John's death in 1690 remarried Christopher Wormley of Christ Church Parish, Middlesex County, Virginia and died there. Orphan William was probably living with his Brother and Guardian John Carter in Lancaster until 1690 and moved across the river when John's widow Elizabeth Travers remarried to Christopher Wormley.

      Further.... this Old Rappahannock Co. Va shows that {John Carter: Transported 29 Nov 1674 (with 179 other persons) by Mr. James Harrison, John Rowzee & Eliz, Margerett, Anne & Elin Mott, the 4 orphans of Mr. Geo Mott; 9019 acres on the S. side of Rappa River about 6 miles up the falls.
      Cavaliers & Pioneers pg 159, Patent Book 6 p 546,}

      Note the reference to Rowzee so there is some sort of familiarity.

      So... young Samuel moved up river to Sittingbourne Parish, Essex County, Virginia and lived with the Rowzee family on the South side of the Rapphahannock.
