      TO ALL CHRISTIAN PEOPLE to whom these presents shall come I JOSEPH GOODRICH of JAMES CITTY COUNTY in Virginia send Greeting &c. Now Know yee that I the said JOSEPH GOODRICH for a valluable consideration in hand already received or secured to be paid have granted unto THOMAS WOOD SENR. of the Parish of Farnham and County of Rappa: in Virginia aforesd. and unto his heires all that parcell of land containing by estimation one hundred acres of land being part of that portion of land left me by my Deced Father, Coll. THOMAS GOODRICH, and Beginning at a white Oake standing upon the land that the sd THOMAS WOOD SENR. formerly purchased of Majr. GEORGE MORRIS and running a direct course from thence alonge an old line of marked trees called Coll. GOODRICH line to corner marked Gum tree, thence down the Swamp by the side of a Run and thence along the said Run untill it comes opposite against a white Oake line tree standing upon the upper side of JOHN FERGISONs Corn Field from thence to the place where it first began. To have and to hold the said One hundred acres of land according as it is bounded in manner aforesd: with all rights and appurtinances Together with all profitts of what name nature or quality soever, unto him the said THOMAS WOOD forever, hee the said THOMAS WOOD his heires paying our Sovereigne Lord the King all such duties and services as shall henceforth become due for the same and I the said JOSEPH GOODRICH do covinant the said THOMAS WOOD at all times hereafter peaceably hold the said land and every part thereof without disturbance of me or my heires and from any claiming under me and will together with my Wife voluntary consent by me to be procured in the County Court of Rappa: aforesaid unto the only sole use of him the said THOMAS WOOD his heires forever In Witness whereof I have sett my hand and seale this 22d day of January in year 1685

      KNOW ALL MEN that I JOSEPH GOODRICH of JAMES CITY COUNTY Gent: do by these presents ordaine and appoint my trusty and well beloved friend, THOMAS EDMONDSON, of the County of Rappa: my true and lawful! Attorney for me to acknowledge in the County Court of Rappa: a Deed of Sale by me the said JOSEPH GOODRICH made and confirmed unto THOMAS WOOD SENR. of the said County of Rappa: of One hundred acres of land according to the above men coned Deed ratifying whatsoever my said Attorney shall do their in as fully as if I myself were personally present. In Witness whereof I have hereunto sett my hand and seal this 22nd day of January 1685

      - In ye difference depending between JNO: CLARKE Plt. & WM. GLOVER Defendt. ye Defendt. by JNO: EVERITT his Attorney comes & defends ye force &c. when &c. & pleads in abatemt: of ye Writt, that he was put into ye possession of Negroes, Cattle &c. by Mr. JOS: GOODRICH at his Plantacon in this County to improve manage & secure as an Overseer & Servant to ye sd GOODRICH, who being since deced, is by ye Ex. of the said GOODRICH & her present Husband continued in ye sd trust service & employmt. & that he knowes nothing of any Cow of ye Plt. upon ye sd Plantacon, but of ye aforesd. GOODRICHs against whose Executrix he humbly conceives ye Writt ought to be brought & therefore demands Judgmt. wch: plea this Court have over ruled, Whereupon ye Defendt. by his Attorney humbly prayes an imparlance &c. which is granted

      THOMAS PARKER & FRANCILIA his Wife, Exx. of JOSEPH GOODRICH deced, complaines against JOHN CLARKE in a plea of Debt that he render unto them ye plts. ye sum of Two thousand one hundred & eight pounds of tobo: & cask which by writing under his hand here in Court ready to be produced, he confesses to ow & stand indebted unto ye aforesaid deced JOSEPH GOODRICH his heirs, Exrs. &c. wch: said sum of Tobo: he hath not paid to ye said deced JOS: GOODRICH nor to these Plts., nor either of them, she ye sd FRANCILIA being Exx. as aforesaid, & ye same from them doth unjustly detaine, wherefore they have brought suit & pray Judgmt. with costs;
      To which the Defendt. by JAMES BOUGHAN, his Attorney appear'd & exhibited an acct. of Eleven hundred pounds of tobo: against ye said Debt, which this Court (on the Oath of WM GLOVER) have regulated to Seven hundred & sixty pounds of tobo: & granted Judgmt. to ye sd Plts. agt: ye Defendt. for Fifteen hundred & twenty eight pounds of tobo: & cask on balance of ye sd Debt includeing an acct: exhibited by ye Pits. agt: ye Defendt., for One hundred & eighty pounds of tobo: allow'd of by ye Defendt. to be paid with cost of suit

      JONATHAN FISHER of KING & QUEEN County complaineth against THOMAS PARKER & FRANCILIA his Wife, Exx. of the last Will and Testament of JOS: GOODRICH, late of JAMES CITY County deced, in a plea of the case & humbly sheweth that ye aforesd. JOSEPH GOODRICH in his life time (to wit) ye fifth day of Febry: in ye year of our Lord God 1691/2, did receive of ye Plt, ye sum of One thousand seven hundred & ninety pounds of sweet sented tobo: in consideracon & for satisfaction whereof ye sd JOS: GOODRICH did oblige himselfe to enfeoffe & confirm unto ye Plt. One hundred acres of land by as ample a conveyance as the Law in that case directs, or otherwise to repay ye Plt. ye aforesd sum of Tobo: back againe, most of which pr:misses by a certaine Note under ye hand of him ye sd GOODRICH bearing date ye day & year aforesd., & here in Court produced will more at large appear; yet notwth:standing the aforesd. JOSEPH
      GOODRICH in his life time ye aforesd one hundred acres of land to ye Plt. did not convey nor insure according to ye true intent & purport of the aforesd, Note, nor yet ye aforesd. sum of 1790 lbs, of sweet sented tobo: to ye Pit. did not returne nor repay neither yet hath he THOMAS PARKER & FRANCILIA his Wife in their capacity since ye death of him ye sd JOSEPH GOODRICH the aforesd. sum to ye Pit. hath not returned nor payed but ye same to repay & satisfie they have hither to denyed & refused although they have been often thereunto
      required, whereupon ye Plt. saith he is damnified & hath brought this suit & prayes Judgment against ye Estate of the aforesd. JOS: GOODRICH in the hands of the aforesd THOMAS PARKER & FRANCILIA his Wife, in their capacity as aforesaid, for the aforesd. sum with cost of suit;
      To which ye Defendts. come by JNO: EVERITT & JAMES WILLIAMS, their Attorneys, & defends &c. when &c. & says that ye sd Plt, his accon ought not to have & maintaine for that by their own showing ye cause of accon is matter of freehold of which ye Defendts. have not authority to answer; on consideracon whereof this Court have dismist the suit

      JOHN CLARKE of this County complaineth THOMAS PARKER and FRANCILIA his Wife, Executrix of the last Will & Testament of JOSEPH GOODRICH, late of JAMES CITY County deced, in a plea of ye Case humbly sheweth that ye aforesd. JOSEPH GOODRICH in his lifetime (to wit) ye 30th. day of Janry: in ye year of our Lord God 1691/2, did take & receive of several persons hereafter named several debts & Bills for Debts properly due & belonging to ye Plt (vidilicet) ROBERT SCRUGGS Bill for One thousand & four hundred pounds of tobacco & ROBERT POWELLs Bill for Three hundred pounds of tobacco, & DANIEL BROWN an Obligacon for Four thousand pounds of tobacco, in all amounting to ye sum of Five thousand & seven hundred pounds to tobacco, which Bills & debts to ye Pit. as aforesd, he ye sd JOSEPH GOODRICH did take & receive in his own name & did oblige himselfe to be accountable to ye Plt. for ye aforesd sum or otherwise to return ye aforesd. Bills to ye Plt. as by a certaine Note under the hand of him ye sd JOSEPH GOODRICH bearing date ye day & year aforesd. & here in Court produced will more at large appear, yet notwithstanding ye aforesd. JOSEPH GOODRICH in his life time the aforesd. sum nor any acct: thereof nor yet the aforesd. Bills according to ye true intent & purport of ye aforesd. Note unto ye Plt. did not render; neither yet hath he aforesd THOMAS PARKER & FRANCILIA his Wife in their capacity as aforesd. since ye death of him ye sd JOSEPH GOODRICH ye aforesd. sum nor ye aforesd. Bills to ye Plt. hath not rendered, but ye sumes to render hath hitherto denyed & refused although they have (by ye Plt.) often been thereunto requir'd, whereupon ye Plt. saith he is damnified & hath damage to ye value of Seven thousand pounds of Tobo, & therefore he hath brought his suit & prayes Judgment against ye Estate of ye aforesd. JOSEPH GOODRICH in ye hands of ye aforesaid THOMAS PARKER & FRANCILIA his Wife in their capacity as aforesd., for ye aforesd. sum To which ye Defendts. appear by JNO: EVERITT & JAMES WILLIAMS their attorneys & defend ye force &c. when &c. for plea say that ye receipt of ye sd JOS: GOODRICH doth only oblige him &c. to make return of the said Bills taken in ye sd GOODRICHs name for & by ye order of him ye Plt.; & therefore offers to return a Bill of DANIEL BROWNEs for four thousand pounds of tobacco & cask payable in two severall years & not yet received by him ye sd deced or thse Defendts., & hereof they pray'd Judgmt. but the sd BROWNEs Bill appearing to be of a later date then the sd GOODRICHs rect., this Court have granted Judgmt. to ye Pit. agt: the Estate of ye sd GOODRICH for Five thousand seven hundred pounds of tobacco to be paid with cost of suit also Exo; from val. Judgmt. ye Defendts. pray an appeale to ye 7th day of ye next Genll. Court for a rehearing of the matter wch, is grnted giveing security according to Law
