1800 tax list for Culpeper County VA District of Daniel Brown. It includes Alexander and John Cooke. These must be the two sons of John Cooke and Elizabeth Burch. I found the marriage of the two daughters of John Cooke which seems to infer that John was in VA between 1782 and 1793. Ann Cooke m. Zephaniah Pratt 22 April 1782 in Fauquier. The Bondsman was William Strother. Elizabeth Cooke m. Isaac Willson 18 Nov. 1793 in Culpeper. Since my Charles
Cooke m. in Fauquier Co. VA in 1798 it seems like his father should be in this area in the 1800 tax
      list.

A letter from Robert Cooke (b. 1752), a soldier of the Revolution, a
grandson of ROBERT COOKE 1720, to his grandson Dr. Robert Fielding Cooke, eldest son of Wm. Henry Cooke. - [copy from THC (Thomas Henderson Cooke)]
      June 15th, 1829
"In process of time the said R. Cooke and S. Fielding got married together and on the 13th day of March, O.S. now the 24th, 1726, they had a son born and called his name John; and in a reasonable time after his birth they had a second son and called his name Alexander, then the said Robert Cooke died and left a young widow and two sons, viz, my father and uncle, who grew up and both married respectable women. My Father married a young woman whose name was Elizabeth Burch, a widow's daughter of a respectable family by whom he had four sons and two daughters, viz: Robert born March the 17th O.S., now the 28th, 1752, John born August the 1st, A.D. 1754, James born the 26th of October, 1760, Alexander born the 22nd of February, 1765. The oldest daughter Elizabeth married Isaac Wilson of Culpepper County, Virginia, by whom she had a son called James Fielding Wilson. They have removed to Kentucky. He is a noted schoolmaster of Floydsburg near Louisville. The other daughter Ann, married Zephanaiah Pratt and removed to Ky. My uncle Alexander Cooke married a respectable young woman, her name was Susannah Reeves by whom he had 5 daughters and one son. His name was called John Upget Cooke, my uncle having no other son. I have been informed that he is dead; tho he married I have no knowledge of his children. As to my brother's sons he raised several in Culpepper County, Virginia where they married and have removed to Monongahala Country. I cannot recollect all their names, the one was called Alexander and another Richard. I am informed he has moved to the Ohio State in his old days. My brother James died at 60 years of age, left 5 sons all respectable, their names; William, George, Charles, John and James. William is dead, George an artist, Charles a Methodist minister stationed at Pittsburg, John an Episcopalian minister in Hanover County in Virginia, James a physician in St. Mary's County, Maryland. {Linda Reno - The only child of John Cooke and Elizabeth Burch that came back to SMC (from what I have) was James Cooke and he was a Sheriff, not a doctor, BUT he was the father of Dr. James Cooke, Jr. of SMC who m. Rebecca White Barber Briscoe.} My brother Alexander Cooke lives in Ky. not far above the falls. I cannot say anything about his children."

Hi Lamont: I am leaning more and more to the John Cooke son of John Cooke and Elizabeth Burch as the father of my Charles Cooke. I found an 1800 tax list for Culpeper County VA District of Daniel Brown. It includes Alexander and John Cooke. These must be the two sons of John Cooke and Elizabeth Burch. Since my Charles Cooke m. in Fauquier Co. VA in 1798 it seems like his father should be in this area in 1800 He can be the son of John who was born 1 Aug 1754 and was a resident of Culpeper County.

When and where did John Cooke who m. Elizabeth Burch die? My feeling is that he went to
Fauquier/Culpeper because I found the marriage of his two daughters there which seems to infer that he was in VA between 1782 and 1793. Ann Cooke m. Zephaniah Pratt 22 April 1782 in Fauquier. The Bondsman was William Strother. Elizabeth Cooke m. Isaac Willson 18 Nov. 1793 in Culpeper.

I do have the 1787 tax list by Netti Schreiner-Yantis. Page 694 has John Sr., Robert & Alexander Cook [John Sr paid the tax for Alex], Page 700 Zephaniah Pratt in Culpeper County. Fauquier Page 268

I've just learned that John Cooke, and his two sons Robert and Alexander, were on a tax list in Culpeper County, Virginia, in the 1780's'; just where I already know that Robert and Alexander were then living. It therefore appears that John Cooke and his wife Elizabeth Burch died in Virginia, and my earlier query can be disregarded, and therefore leave more time for other intricately involved investigations into the ancestry of the inhabitants of St. Mary's County.
