I am currently researching the various William Smith's of this area from ca 1680 - 1750.
In the Order Books and other court documents, he was referred to as "William Smith on the Road" or William Smith by the Road".
The area that I am researching is on the north side of the Rappahannock in Westmoreland, Richmond, Northumberland and Lancaster Counties. It seems that there were several initial grants that fell on both sides of the Rappahannock and as the land started being divided amongst the children, families lived on both sides.
The William Smith that I am researching died in 1742/43 and had links to William Garland, Henry Miskell, and Catherine Gwynn Brockenbrough. Other people I found specific ties with are Owen Jones, Miles Hugall/Hugill, John Steward and George Saunders. His sons were named David, Samuel and William which makes me think that perhaps he was the son of David and had a brother or uncle named Samuel.
I know that there was a David Smith in the MD area about 1680 that then came to either Westmoreland or Northumberland county. I can't remember just where he was from and where he came to put will locate what I found and will send more questions tomorrow. I realize that you may not have what I'm looking for with you but maybe I'll get lucky and it was in Westmoreland. I am still convincing myself that I really need to look in yet another place for Smith records - the 4 counties in the Northern Neck were plenty to keep me busy! I have created a spreadsheet to help track land adjacencies, witnesses and other various relationships that has been very helpful. So far, I have compiled quite a few records on most of the families in that area and would be happy to share what I have. Most of the information is on Richmond Co but I also have Northumberland, Lancaster and Westmoreland. If you know what families you are interested in, I'd be happy to look up what I have.
