Mr. Humpherie Haggate, atty. to James Lee, Plt.; George Thompson, atty. to Francis Pope, Def.; Lee was empowered by the will of Joseph Lenton to see after his estate and assist his wife and 2 children; funeral debt of 1692# of tobacco; Capt. Battin, age ca 43 years, states that James Lee came to his house saying Joseph Lenton's wife was dead and desired to have some drinks and mourning ribbon for her funeral; because of bad weather he tarried a day and drank one of the 3 barrels ordered for the funeral Humpherie Haggate, age ca 33 years, swore Ursula Lenton, widow, came to his house and stated her husband was dead and had made a will empowering James Lee and John Tomkinson as overseers; Mr. Woodberie made out the will; the overseers agreed with John Williams to live there and manage her business
Jane Delahay, age ca 33 years, swore that Ursula Lenton stated John Tomkinson and James Lee hired John William to take care of her business Will of Joseph Lenton; 15 Dec 1660; In the name of God Amen this my last will I being in good memory ... will my estate to my wife except my land and two cows which I give unto my child which she now goeth with the cows at the birth of my child and the land when the child shall come of age; if child should die all is to return to my wife ... my good friends James Lee and John Tomkins to take care of my wife and child; /s/ Joseph Lenton (mark); wit. Mr. John Meekes, by his atty. William Price, presents this petition: Whereas your petitioner being a stranger and having obtained an order against the estate of Humphery Haggat to the value of 3935# of tobacco; begs that this business may be heard between the sheriff and that action take place
Sheriff produced the ensuring: An appraisement of 2 servants of Anne Haggat, admn. of Humphery Haggat taken on execution by order from John Meekes 10 Feb 1663; the appraiser Henry Franchom and Nehemiah Little
