Esther J. Brookes did not die at Mount Calvert, Upper Marlboro, Maryland.
After her husband's death, she sold the property and returned to Alexandria with her three boys. After the war about 1870 she built a large Queen Anne house at the corner of Prince and Washington Sts.(701 Prince St). It was there she lived with her eldest son, William Fowle Brookes, and his family.
The house was razed in 1928

She had three sons, William Fowle Brookes(1847-1928), John St. Clair Brookes (1849-1922) and George Dashiell Brookes.
