      Records of ISHAM TATUM

      Culpeper-Madison Counties VIRGINIA

Isham Tatum was a near neighbor of Samuel and Sarah Tatum in Culpeper County and after 1792 just across the county line in Madison County. He was a Minister, and unlike Samuel Tatum a slaveowner. No family relationship is indicated in the records. One of his sons was Nathaniel Tatum, once again a name long associated with the Tatums of Prince George County VA.

1782. CULPEPER. Isham Tatum, Personal Estate tax shows 2 horses, 4 cows and 3 slaves, James, Sukey and Fanny. Isham Tatum continues on tax roll through 1792.

1786 circa. CULPEPER. Reverend Isham Tatum, active in Culpeper County.

1794, September 25. MADISON. William Clark appoints Reuben Clark to divide land on Licking Creek in Fayette County KY. Isham Tatum is to have 500 AC of this land. (DB 1-124) Deed to this land, William Clark to Isham Tatum dated October 25, 1798. (DB 2-238)

1797, December 8. MADISON. Richard Gaines to Isham Tatum, 135 AC on Little Crooked Run. Copy of this deed delivered to Nathaniel Tatum in 1856. (DB 2-111)

Little Crooked Run is the line between Culpeper County and Madison County.

1798, October 10. MADISON. James May and Mary his wife to Isham Tatum, 134 AC. Deed delivered to Nathaniel Tatum in 1856. (DB 2-271)

1798. MADISON. Catey Tierce to John Wayland, 30 AC. Copy of deed delivered to Isham Tatum on November 24, 1800. (DB 2-151)

1800, November 27. MADISON. Zacaharias Huffman and Catey his wife to Isham Tatum, land on Spences Road, no acreage given. (DB 3-25)

1804. CULPEPER. Isham Tatum, mentioned in estate accounts of Anne Green dec'd. (WB E-261)

1815, September 25. ORANGE COUNTY. William Tatum dec'd. Inventory by Benjamin Lancaster, William Reynolds, Washington REynolds. (WB 5-98)

May not be a member of this family, but Orange County is adjacent to Madison.

1818, September 22. CULPEPER. Isham Tatum mar Susanna Bayne.

1818. MADISON. Isham Tatum Jr, son of Isham Tatum mar Mary Hume.

1844-1850. MADISON. Isham Tatum, WILL written May 13, 1844 with Codicil of June 12, 1847, proved June 27, 1850. ABSTRACT. Wife Frances to have land, Negros and all his estate, but he provides for three slaves to be freed. (WB 9-184) Index shows an inventory (WB 10-528) and an estate settlement (WB 13-266,325)

This is the only early Tatum will in Madison. If this is the Isham Tatum who was a grown man in 1782 with family and slaves, he would be 90+ years old.

There are other records of this family, 1830+ in Madison County, not taken for this paper.
