      The Overton County, Tennessee Cookseys...

The Overton County Cookseys are not closely related to the Cookseys of South Carolina origin. These are descendents of the "Samuel Cooksey line". They are Joseph Ward Cooksey, and his two sons, William born 1794, and Jessee, born 1796. Both were born in Virginia. Joseph was born ca. 1768 in Maryland, the son of Lemaster Cooksey, son of John J. Cooksey, son of Samuel Cooksey. Prior to living in Overton County, this family lived briefly in Cumberland County, Kentucky. Joseph, William, and Jessee are all on the Overton County census, in 1820. William and Jesse are still present in 1830, but their father had returned to Cumberland County, Kentucky. William moved to Scott County, Iowa, and later Appanoose County, Iowa. Jessee later moved to Morgan County, Illinois.
