King George County Will book
SEGMENT OF A SURVEY OF THE NORTHERN NECK OF VIRGINIA
ON THE REVERSE of this page is a segment of a 1737 survey of the Northern Neck of Virginia, made at the insistence of My Lord Thomas Fairfax, proprietor of that great domain, showing King George County and adjacent areas as the said county existed during the period of Will Book A-1 [1721-1752].
King George County was created by Act of Assembly in 1720 to become effective 23 April 1721 at which time it was to include the upper portion of Richmond County from Charles' Beaver Dams and from the head thereof by a North course to Westmoreland County. Thus the newly formed county of King George was long and narrow stretching from Charles' Beaver Dams [now known as Brockenbrough Creek] up the Northern Neck along the Rappahannock River watershed to the head springs of that long, narrow and meandering stream which played an important part in the settlement of the vast fertile lands on both sides of the Rappahannock River.
Consequently it is important to realize during the 1721-1731 period of Will Book A-1, King George County extended above Muddy Creek [the present dividing line between King George and Stafford counties and marked "Muddy cr" on this 1737 survey] through the entire Rappahannock watershed of the present county of Stafford and up the Rappahannock to Deep Run [the present dividing line between Stafford and Fauquier county and marked "Deep r" on this 1737 survey].
At this time there were two towns in King George County both of which are now in other counties, viz: Leedstown (now in Westmoreland County) and Falmouth (now in Stafford County). In 1731 the area of King George County was considerably lessened by the erection of Prince William County from the upper parts of King George and Stafford County and to include "all the lands on the heads of the said Counties, above Chopawansick Creek on Potomac River and Deep Run on Rappahannock River, and a southwest line to be made from the head of the north branch of the said creek to the head of the said Deep Run ... and shall be called by the name of Prince William County." This vast area included the present counties of Prince William, Fairfax, Fauquier, Loudoun and Arlington.

Note:
In 1727 the town which was known as Falmouth was granted a charter. This prosperous little community was then a part of King George County which was added to Stafford in 1778 when a swap of territory was arranged to improve the workability of the two counties.
